Almost every chiropractic patient that comes to Central Avenue Health Centre has the same problem – they are stressed! Emotional, physical and chemical stress are the three types of stress that can manifest into health issues if not addressed. Stress impacts the nervous system, and since chiropractors directly affect the nervous system, you shouldn’t be surprised to know that chiropractors are stress experts!
Emotional Stress
As we know, emotional stress can come from many aspects of our lives. The big four emotional stressors are; health problems, marital/relationship problems, financial strain and work. Even though these start out as emotional stress, they easily escalate to a physical problem when not dealt with quickly. Headaches, tight neck and shoulder muscles, jaw pain, loss of appetite and poor sleep are commonly the result.
Physical Stress
Physical stress comes in many different forms; from traumatic and overuse injuries to the energy required to perform your job or do house work. Physical stress can also be caused by poor posture, ineffectual mechanics and lack of sleep. Exercise is another form of physical stress; but in the correct quantity and with enough time for the body to recuperate between sessions, this type of stress can be used to our advantage to make us fitter and stronger. Aches and pains are often related to physical stress and they can result in headaches, difficulty concentrating and exhaustion.

Chemical Stress
Chemical stress is often forgotten about until January 1st when many people decide to ‘detox’ after an indulgent holiday season. Alcohol and poor nutrition are often the main culprits, however caffeine, medication and smoking also contribute to chemical stress. Digestive problems, inhibited immune system and fatigue reflect an overload of chemical stress.
Stress Relief
It is important to remember that stress is cumulative. Small stressors can build over time leading to a significant health crisis. Thankfully, there are many simple ways to stay in control of the amount of stress you are experiencing. Eating a healthy diet, regular exercise and quality sleep are great ways to start. Having your posture checked, investing in orthotics and a proper pillow will mitigate gradual physical stressors. Finally, see a stress expert! Any of our chiropractors would love to help you address your stress concerns and see you reaching your full potential!
